French

French is the foreign language we learn together.

In our languages teaching we use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement in French these include:

  • games
  • role-play
  • songs (particularly action songs!)

When possible we invite confident speakers into the classroom, in order to expose the children to more than one voice in the language.

At KS2, we begin to encourage writing skills and independent reading and these become increasingly important with progression year on year. We also find it important to prepare children to be worldly wise and have an understanding of some international, particularly French, culture. We feel it is important children believe in tolerance and understanding through the use of language.

We hope that by the end of their time with us all our children will :

  • have an understanding of language structure, which they can apply to another language
  • be able to hold a short, simple conversation and understand a range of familiar language in French
