Design Technology

Design Technology Intent

We are dedicated to giving the children creative opportunities to be responsible for their own learning, not only through discrete teaching of Design Technology, but through the wider curriculum. We want to prepare our children to enter later life with a love of creativity, design, planning, testing and evaluating to understand the process of signing and building.

Our curriculum includes the direct teaching of design technology skills, creative thinking and use of materials well as specific teaching around curriculum areas e.g. history and geography links- catapults, bridge designs.

Implementation

We use the CUSP scheme to implement the DT curriculum (see class pages for long term plans)

Curriculum Drivers

  • Persevere in our work and to enjoy a range of different styles, including expressing ourselves through being creative.
  • Respect the earth and the variety of people living in it.
  • Show friendship to people from around the world and understand how art and design links us.
  • Be inspired by many forms of.

Enrichment Activities

There are links with the STEM activities, working with local ambassadors and work in a locality to improve the environment with designs. Y5/6 undertake weekly baking lessons in our kitchen to support the community cafe. We visit museums such as the Science Musuem in London and attend STEM fairs and exhibitions.

Impact

Children are assessed against our curriculum endpoints and  through a variety of different methods: small assessment tasks, retrieval practice, low-stake quizzes, classroom responses and teacher judgements.

Leaders monitor teaching and learning through child voice, parental questionnaires as well as book looks and learning walks and using the online app SeeSaw to record evidence of learning. The development of the children in school is also monitored through daily informal conversations.

  • Children will develop lifelong learning behaviours such as pride, resilience and team work.
  • Our children will be able to understand, appreciate and success in modern Britain.
  • Our children will develop a lifelong love of learning through our vision and drivers.
  • Our children will be responsible global citizens and courageous advocates through the Christian Values we have instilled in them during their time in school.
  • All children will leave our school, fully equipped for the next stage in their learning.
