French is the foreign language we teach at Penny Bridge Primary. In our languages teaching, we use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement in French: these include games, role-play and songs (particularly action songs). and when possible we use confident speakers in the classroom, in order to expose the children to more than one voice in the language. At KS2, we begin to encourage writing skills in independent reading and these become increasingly important with progression year on year. We also find it important to prepare children to be worldly wise and have an understanding of some national, particularly French, culture. We feel it is important children believe in tolerance and understanding through the use of language and hope all children achieve a basic understanding of some language structure, which they can apply to another language and will be able to hold a short, simple conversation and understand a range of familiar language.
