Welcome to the Starlings class page!
The Starlings are made up of 15 year 2 children and 12 year 1 children taught by Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Newberry. The class is also supported by our Senior Teaching Assistant Mrs Barker.
Mrs Armstrong teaches - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning
Mrs Newberry teaches - Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday
At this age, children are so eager to learn new things and share any experiences that they have had. This is encouraged and is a very enjoyable part of teaching this age group. The topics that we cover in Year 1 and 2 are taught in many different ways that give each individual child the chance to share. We provide a challenging but supportive curriculum drawing from our learning journeys to build skills and independence.
Reading is a priority in Starlings therefore we aim to hear the children read three times a week and use Read Write Inc. to support the children's decoding and comprehension skills. RWI writing sessions link writing tasks to the books they are reading.
RWI books will be sent home weekly for you to support your child's confidence in reading fluently. We feel it is very important for the children to have a caring and sharing attitude towards each other and encourage polite and well-mannered behaviour.
For more information about the RWI programme please go to the English section on the website.
In the Starlings class we upload key events or work in our school day to our online platform 'Sessaw' this connects both school and parents, allowing them to access their child's journal from home. Homework will also be uploaded onto seesaw and be marked electronically.
Our first topic for Autumn Term is - Memory Box
This is a history based project which will teach the children about changes over time - their own families and the community we live in. The children will collect items to put in their very own memory box to help with the teaching and learning of this topic. It is a wonderful topic to start in the Autumn Term with as it means as a class we get to know lots about each other.
